  • Unguja (commonly referred to as Zanzibar): Unguja is more urbanized and economically active than Pemba.

  • Pemba: Pemba is approximately a 4-hour journey from Unguja.

• Mainland Tanzania is often informally referred to as “Bongo.”

• Common abbreviations:

  • Zanzibar → ZNZ

  • Tanzania → TZ

• Driving license note:

  • A Mainland Tanzania license is not valid in Zanzibar

  • A Zanzibar license is valid in Mainland Tanzania
